As you may already know, I’m a big fan of to-do lists. The satisfaction of checking things off and seeing how much you’ve got done is just such a great feeling. Today I wanted to share a handful of tips for conquering your to-do lists!
1. TACKLE A BIG TASK FIRST
Saving all of your big tasks for the end will leave you overwhelmed. Start off your list with a major task to knock it out right away. Once you’re done, do some smaller tasks in between your next big task.
2. SCHEDULE OUT YOUR TIME
When I have a big to-do list I like to plan out when I’m going to do each task. My planner has an hourly layout so I use that. So, for example, I’ll write in doing a reading assignment from 4pm to 5pm, write in working on a paper from 5pm to 6pm, and so on. While I don’t necessarily use up the amount of time I schedule or end up using more time than planned, it helps me know what order I want to get things done in.
3. KEEP TRACK OF DEADLINES
When I make my to-do list, I write out all of my tasks and in parentheses afterward, I write down when it’s due. For example, if one of my tasks is to finish a paper by Monday, I’ll write (Mon) after the task so I can keep track of when I need to complete it by. I tend to make big weekly to-do lists, so writing down days is helpful to me.
4. USE FREE TIME TO GET SMALL TASKS DONE
When you’ve got some free time and are just sitting down on your phone or watching Netflix, see what small tasks you can get done! If one of the things I need to get done is editing pictures for Instagram, I can tackle that task while hanging out in my room watching a movie. It gives me downtime and helps me knock off some things from my list.
5. DON’T SWEAT IT
You won’t get everything checked off your to-do list every single day, and that’s OKAY! I used to make lists and panic if I didn’t think I would finish it all in one day. You don’t have to be productive every single minute that you’re awake each day. Just make your list of things you’d like to get done and try to do as much as you can. If, by 3pm, you just want to take a nap and rest, then do it! Your list will still be there when you’re ready, and everything will get done in time. Don’t worry too much!
