Christmas Cookies: My Go-To

Hi! Welcome to Blogmas Day 6! I can’t believe we’re halfway through Blogmas!

Today I’m going to share with you how I make my go-to sugar cookies for the holidays! I’ve started baking these cookies to bring to parties in general and people always love them! They’ll be sure to be a big hit at your next holiday function.

For the actual cookies, all I use is the bag of Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix. Nice and easy! You just have to add a few ingredients and mix them together and your dough is all set. Of course, you can make the cookies by scratch if you’d like, but I find that the mix just works better for me personally.

After the dough is made, I recommend chilling it in the fridge. I typically let it chill overnight, but you could leave it in for about an hour if you need them done in the same day.

Once your dough is chilled, start rolling it out! You might need to work it with your hands a bit to get it warm enough to roll out. Make sure to cover your workspace with flour because the dough is going to be sticky!

After the dough is rolled out to be 1/4 of an inch thick, you can start cutting out your cookies! Typically I put them onto the cookie sheet(s) I’m going to bake them on after they’re cut. Don’t worry about spacing them, because it’s not time to put them in the oven yet!

Then I put the cookies back in the fridge! Putting them in the fridge after cutting them out helps them keep their shape better when baking. After chilling them again (for at least one hour) it’s time to bake!

After the cookies are done baking, I typically leave them on top of the stove to cool. While they cool, I start making the royal icing! Royal icing is perfect for decorating cookies because it is the type of frosting that hardens after a while. Plus, the recipe to make it is super easy.

HOMEMADE ROYAL ICING INGREDIENTS

  • 3 ounces pasteurized egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar

TO MAKE:

  1. Combine egg whites and vanilla. Beat until frothy.
  2. Add sugar and mix slowly
  3. Turn speed up and mix until stiff, glossy peaks form

Once your frosting is done you can split it up and add food coloring and decorate your cookies however you like!

These cookies are super easy to make and take great! Bring them to your next party and you’ll be sure to have one of the tastiest desserts there!
