Self-Care Tips for College Students

Hi, welcome back to my blog!

I’m officially moved back into school and getting into the swing of my new schedule! I wanted to write a post related to college since it’s about to basically take over my life again! In college, self-care is so important. Today I’m sharing with you 10 tips for self-care!

1. START SAYING NO

When at school, you sometimes can feel this pressure to do absolutely everything. While joining clubs and doing fun things with friends is really good, sometimes saying no can benefit you more. You don’t want to burn yourself out. It’s okay to take time off for yourself and recharge. The world will be waiting for you when you’re ready.

2. HIT THE GYM

Getting your sweat on is a great way to take a break and de-stress. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, take a break to hit the gym. Get some adrenaline running and your body (and mind) will thank you later. If you don’t have gym access, find an online workout you can do in your dorm or go for a long walk; anything to get your body moving.

3. HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX NIGHT

Sometimes you just need to detox. We’ve all been there. We get caught up in social media. Before you know it you’ve got FOMO from people you haven’t seen in months, you feel like your life is nothing compared to one girl’s curated Instagram page, or you analyze every single picture you’ve posted until you hate it. Take a break, log out of social media, and enjoy at least a few hours off the grid.

4. SLEEP

Sleep is SO. IMPORTANT. Especially while in college. Don’t compromise your sleep. I know sometimes assignments come and you save them for the last minute, or they simply just have a lot of work and you don’t have the time, but try your hardest to get a good night’s rest. Your body recharges and rejuvenates itself during sleep. Your brain transfers memories to long-term while you sleep. Sleep should become a non-negotiable in your life. It’ll make all the difference.

5. JOURNAL

This is one of my favorite things to do if I’m feeling stressed or upset. Writing down how I feel and what is going on in my life is so beneficial to me. If anything, write down everything that’s bothering you on a piece of paper and simply throw it out. Putting your feelings into words is a great way to understand how or why you feel a certain way so you can take the necessary steps to fix it.

6. EAT A HEALTHY MEAL/SNACK

Dining hall food is typically unhealthy. Running out with your friends for a late night snack ends with you grabbing food that’s typically unhealthy. Do yourself a favor and try to get healthy foods into your diet. I know firsthand that accomplishing a healthy diet at school is very difficult, but your body is the only one you get. Aim to at the very least eat one healthy meal/snack each day.

7. CLEAN YOUR ROOM

When I’m at school, I can’t function if my room is messy. I do a lot of my blogging and homework in my room, so if it’s messy I can’t concentrate as well on the tasks at hand. Having a clean room helps me be more productive since there’s nothing around me that’s out of place that will distract me.

8. TAKE A HOT SHOWER OR BATH

A great way to destress is by taking a hot shower or bath. You have some time to yourself where you can play some music (or watch something if taking a bath) and relax. Warm water can help to relax muscle tension, which you might have if you’re feeling stressed.

9. DRINK SOME ICE WATER

Another non-negotiable? WATER. Don’t drink soda every time you enter the dining halls. Carry a water bottle around with you wherever you go and fill it with ice water so you’ll have a cold, refreshing, and good-for-you drink all the time! Plus, if you’re craving unhealthy foods, drink some water. You more often than not are not actually hungry, and drinking water will help.

10. SET SHORT-TERM GOALS

Sometimes at school, we have so many things to it can become overwhelming. To help combat that, try setting some short-term goals for the day/week. It could be something like setting up a to-do list and making your goal to complete at least 1/3 of the things on it by the end of the day. Another short-term goal could be simply meeting your best friend for dinner twice this upcoming week. Setting up short-term goals allows you to look at everything you need to do and make a game plan so you don’t become overwhelmed.

These are just a few ways to help take care of yourself while away at school! College can be a stressful time, but working towards being your healthiest and happiest self is very beneficial!

  1. Love the tip about saying NO! I think this is important to everyone! It can be easy to keep saying “yeah, I can handle that” and then before you know it, you’ve told like 100 people that you can help and you can just get so overwhelmed!

    1. Yes! I agree, that one is a good one! Usually when I’m really stressed I’ll take a night off from social media or at least just a couple of hours and it helps me focus so much more!
