A Journey to My Past: One Facebook Photo at a Time

While trying to come up with an idea for a post this week, I had this urge to try and do something lighthearted and fun. I was going to review a book I recently just finished, but it was about a very heavy topic, so I decided to postpone that for a future post (mini-spoiler, I absolutely loved the book) and do something else this week.

I was looking at lists of blog post ideas and one was to write about your goals for 5 years in the future and that inspired me. Why not write about 5 years in the past? And why not completely embarrass myself on the internet by going a little further and instead of writing about my past show you through my old Facebook photos? I haven’t looked at these pictures until right now as I’m typing, so all of my reactions are 100% from the heart.

This is the first picture on my Facebook. I joined Instagram before it was used as a typical social media, back when it was a fairly small community of actual photographers (or people who were at least good with an iPhone camera) sharing beautiful pictures they took. This was my attempt to fit into the aesthetic of quality, artsy photos on Instagram. Not sure how well I succeeded, not sure why I also uploaded it to Facebook.

This is the first picture of me on my Facebook. This was a selfie with my best friend Meg when we were in London on a trip with our families! I cropped her out because I don’t know how much she would want pictures of her from 2013 posted here. (I am such a good friend!) I know for a fact there were more pictures of me from before then, but post-puberty me had the decency to delete those, although now I’m (almost) wishing I hadn’t.

This wonderful picture is from a day when apparently I wanted to become a model. I 100% was alone and set my camera up on a tripod with a self-timer when taking this one. Classic.

The rest of my uploads were from junior and senior year of high school where I looked pretty much the same as I do now. So instead of showing you those, it’s time for the infamous tagged photos. If you’re on social media, you know what I mean when I say infamous. The picture you post has been carefully picked, with a filter strategically placed. The picture you’re tagged in is none of those things. Usually posted by a family member who doesn’t realize the art of only posting photos you look good in. It’s quite unfortunate.

Here is a wonderful vacation photo of me from when my family went to Lake George in New York one summer. My favorite part about this picture is that I still own the shorts I’m wearing in it. I actually wore them yesterday.

Ah, sophomore year of high school. Back when I thought wearing cheetah print made me cool and when I overdid my eyebrows to the point where they were almost nonexistent.

I mean seriously, WHAT was I thinking with those eyebrows? This picture is so bad, I debated putting it in this post. But, I promised to completely embarrass myself today, so here it is, ready for the world to see.

I’ll leave you all with one last picture. This was from one night when we had a picnic dinner on the beach. We saw a woman with a metal detector walking along the shore, so naturally, we followed her and threw some quarters in the sand so she could find something that night. We unfortunately never saw her find them.

In conclusion, always put down your tweezers and get a second eyebrow opinion, and always remember that life may be fleeting, but the internet is forever.

Take a look at your first Facebook profile picture! Has anything changed since then?
